Arts-based therapy (ABT) is the use of various art forms such as visual arts, music, dance, storytelling and more in a therapeutic way under the facilitation of a trained therapist. Though it is non-clinical and does not fall under the domain of psychotherapy, it is scientific and evidence-based.
Visual arts, photography, clay-modelling, collage, music, rhythm, movement, poetry, narrative, meditation, visualisation……. the list is endless. It could be something as simple as the way you drink your coffee!
During the session, you explore your own creativity while using the art forms to tap into your inner self. You reflect, heal and grow as I guide you through the therapeutic process.
If you are thinking, “I don’t know how to draw or paint”, don’t worry. You don’t need to be an artist to do this. You could have dabbled with paint in your kindergarten and that is fine too. All you need is an open mind. This is not an art class. There is no judgement. There is no right or wrong method. It is your expression. It is accepted and definitely respected.
While you could find relief from stress while using the art forms on your own, in order to achieve your therapeutic goal, the process needs to be guided by a specialist trained for the purpose. Intentional engagement in arts often taps into the subconscious and can bring to the surface memories or feeling that may have been inaccessible earlier. These unleashed emotions need to be directed towards healing by a trained facilitator.
In an art class, focus is on learning technique and skill of the art form while arts-based therapy uses the art forms for mindful expression in a safe, non-judgmental, confidential space. There are no rules for how to create art in arts-based therapy. The client enjoys the benefits of the creative process. Instead of evaluation, there is only communication and reflection with the aim to heal.
I’ve often heard parents say they wish their child came with a ‘user manual’ they could upgrade at intervals to ease the parenting process. As a trained professional, I develop strategies and tools to help parents become the caregiver they want to be. I assist parents in generating a customised plan of action as they deal with everyday issues and struggles such as – morning routines, bedtime battles, power struggles, homework challenges…and more.
Parenting workshops can help give you a better grasp on what to expect, learn more about parenting and discipline styles and help you feel confident.
It’s never too early and never too late. As a strategist, my programs enable you to understand your evolving role as a parent even as your child grows. However, it is ideal to be coached and develop a toolkit before crisis hits. Prevention is always better than cure, right?
You can definitely expect understanding, support and practical strategies. During our 1-hour online meeting, you will be heard. We shall discuss the situation together. After our session, you will receive a summary of what we discussed along with a parenting plan. It is a proven fact that the value of insights achieved during the coaching phone call is increased exponentially by putting those insights into practice in your day-to-day parenting. You have the option of a follow-up session too.
You are welcome to attend workshops. These give you insights and help you identify areas you could tweak in your own parenting to get optimal results in your connection with your child.
I always begin from the premise that you are your own best authority and that we can work together to help you uncover your inner wisdom and work out a few guidelines that will empower you as a parent in the current day.
